Listen, here's the thing with Cutler as the Bear's QB; his history does not show he does well past his 2nd read. Physical talent wise he is probably the best guy to put the C on his helmet in many years, as long as I can remember. But Mike Martz offenses require a guy to be a quick decision maker and find his 2nd receiver after about 1.5 seconds, his third after 2.5 seconds, and have thrown the ball by 3.0 seconds. Why? Because his blocking schemes ALWAYS leave at least one guy unblocked and never use the tight end as a primary target.
So to make it in this offense, Cutler is going to have to:
A) Throw the ball quickly, something he hasn't shown he can do, B) Adapt to an offense with little use of the tight end, he's had very good tight ends to throw to in Denver and last year in Chicago, and C) Find a reliable first receiver in Chicago, who I don't see on the roster.
His only saving grace may be having two top notch backs to throw to (again probably third reads) in Forte and Taylor.
That's why I don't think Cutler is going to cut it (no pun intended) in Chicago.

Kind of like listening to Mills and Tucker ... arguing like old married couples. I love it! As an outsider to this discussion, I can see everyone's points and can't really pick anyone apart!

Old married couple? Ok. You and me, Stevo. Charger & Bronco fan. What glorious fights we could have! (hey, if we get to pick, I want to be Jim Miller, ok?) You're right. Cutler doesn't have a quick release. He is a scrambler. He likes being out of the pocket. That's one of the reasons Shanahan drafted him: He wanted to re-insert the naked bootleg and the rollout into the Bronco offense. Martz used to be OC under Don Coryell. I wonder why he hasn't adhered to the teachings of the Master? I don't remember Dan Fouts being the king of the 7 step drop. Am I wrong? CC

The Martz system is a version of what Coryell pioneered many years ago, but certainly different in that it pays almost no attention to the tight end and uses the back as a receiver much more, hence the 5 or 7 step drop. Martz's system does work, but it seems to be limited to turf or fast fields and a very specific set of QB and skill players around him. Fouts was a very fast decision maker, right up there with Marino in my book, and similar to Kurt Warner. Cutler, as we have both pointed out, is not. Can he become one? Only time will tell but I think that's something you're born with, not groomed into. I could be dead wrong on this, I just don't think so.

Man a BEAR fan speaking up for his team I love it, thats whats great about this site. Sounds like hes been a fan for 40 plus years, nice. Bears are my second fav team,Brians song and I am third hooked me as a kid when they came out in 70's even hunted down a Piccolo card at a card shop, love that card.Anyway as a live long Broncos fan i have to feel sorry for the bear fans.Love the way you stand up for your QB,Good luck,For two and a half seasons i had to watch the guy and it was painful, people get all happy about how hard and far he can toss the ball. That gets old as your team loses game after game because he screws up, misses wide open guys and pouts about everything. He spends more time jawing at the other team and when your team isnt even at a 500 w-l record as a fan that will piss you off,it gets old. You want you qb to be a leader and get the job done, shut the hell up and play football win some key games, quit throwing pick after pick( many are pick 6 at that).Quit crying for a flag everytime you are hit. His two full years at denver we had a shot for a wild card after 12 weeks, both seasons he folded the last four games in games we should have won at home with picks that cost us games, vs raiders pick 6,vs dolphins pick 6, vs bills key pick in red zone. Then last few min of game in red zone he bounced a pass 8 yards in front of wide open Stokly in flats next play over throws marshall in end zone(about 10 yrds over his head) game and playoff hopes done. He will break your heart. He is terrible in the red zone, you saw that last year vs SF on national tv.Why was your defence so bad last year? Everybody wants to blam this or that, start with 26 picks and 9 fumbles!! They were on field way to long.So why do I feel sorry for the Bears? It will cost lovie his job

Sorry last reply went on and on but cutler gets my blood pressure up.So as i was sayingunless the bears can really turn it around(which i dont think cutler is able to do yet)It will cost lovie his job and then the bears will be like the broncos trying a new head coach, hoping that works, if it doesn't then you are set back 5 0r 10 years looking for a coach that gets it back for you. Then you lose great players as they get old,the urlachers ect.If they don't turn it around now it could be a long 5 or 10 years for bear fans, so thats why i feel bad for the bear fans. Im there holding on to the rim and cutler was the qb that put us there.Same pick problems, same red zone choking, Been there donr that and it isn't fun.Good luck

According to people who should know, he either yells at his own receivers or pouts all the time, got it? Secondly, I feel like you may not have watched the same guy named Jay Cutler who used to play QB here in Denver. Was he terrible last year in Chicago? Yes. Was he terrible when he played for the Broncos? If you answered yes, you are speaking purely from an emotional standpoint and exist in a reality that is based on a PR campaign created by Joe Ellis to rewrite Jay's time here wearing the Orange & Blue. That point of view is so tired...give it a rest. CC

CC is right, Rivers is the one that jaws at the other teams fans. He's been called out for it on Sirius radio for it. Wonder if this topic can go all the way to the Lions/Bears game

Last year he is quoted as yelling "We OWN you!" to some of the Charger players. Rivers... McDaniels... Cutler... I guess it's all the same to some people. CC
